NELSON'S RUNNING

RUNNING REPORT - 2007

baltimore harborHmmm....I guess this running thing is no passing fancy. Here we are again at the end of another year full of running-themed adventures that made lifelong memories for me...and how cool that my work in TV, online and RUNNING TIMES Magazine allowed me to share so much of it all with my friends around the world.

Two of my running superheroes, one real and one fictional, were part of the 2007 experience. 1)My inspirational pal, ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes, and I finally got the opportunity to run together in a marathon! 2)The comic book character THE FLASH was not only a brilliant Halloween costume that impressed the folks at Warner Brothers, but his lightening-bolt logo now adorns my left shoulder in tattoo form!

In addition to a second year as a sponsored athlete for The Snickers Marathon Team, I also began a running-specific training program with Charlayne Barger at Equinox Fitness and made some dramatic performance improvements that will propel me with vigor into 2008. Thanks everyone for your continued support and interest, especially when I was fundraising for Camp Heartland. I hope my athletic endeavors and joy of running will help inspire you to keep active in the new year!

Here are some highlights from my 2007 Running Log, including a PERSONAL BEST Marathon time, 1st place Division title and Record-Breaking Annual Mileage, 1300 on the nose!

January
*Paramount 10k - My pal Rob and I ran this and met a new running buddy/Sunrise viewer, Brian Livingston...small world! 46:45

March
*DC National Marathon - A new personal best of 4:03:46 and a special opportunity to run half the distance with my niece, Page Ann, through our nation's capital. A family reunion at the finish line made it extra memorable. (That, and beating the Mayor!)

April
*Malibu Trail 9k - My first trail event and I took first place in my division with 52:14. My article on the Firenze Marathon ran in RUNNING TIMES Magazine.

May
*Palos Verdes Half Marathon - A 3 year tradition and one of the most scenic courses around. 1:52:06

July
*San Francisco Marathon - A huge event and I finished in 4:15:55, 1685/4250, running into my friend Marlin atop the Golden Gate Bridge. I also got to meet my marathon-enthusiast pen pal, Markham, and try out his favorite Mexican cantina in San Fran.

August
*Jet to Jetty 10k - My gym buddy Jeff tagged along for one of my favorite annual runs. 46:02 was my time and in my division was 8/20.

September
*My research into the best SoCal trail runs made for a feature article in RUNNING TIMES Magazine.

November
*1st Annual Catalina Eco Marathon - The most grueling and magnificent all-trail course imaginable. I was thrilled to do several miles alongside Dean Karnazes and come in at 4:41:30, 59th out of 178...66 others didn't even finish...
