NELSON'S RUNNING

RUNNING REPORT - 2014

baltimore harborIf last year's greatest challenge was adapting to the weather extremes of the Northeast's seasons, this year it has been maintaining my fitness levels throughout the frenzy of all the international travel! From NYC, I made several trips to Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore and got my passport stamped in Aruba, Hong Kong, Australia and France. The forecast for next year is pretty much the same but, mercifully, one thing that is NOT slowing me down is AGE.

I celebrated the release of my new book "MY PRIME TIME: Middle Age is Only the Beginning"...my take on living happily at any age and a bonus is having added material from many of my celeb pals and Running notables like Dean Karnazes, Kathrine Switzer, Roger Robinson and Jordan Metzl. http://nelsonaspen.com/myPrimeTime/ A big thank you to my trainers Rudys & Chris who have helped keep me in good shape all year long. and my running partner, Amy Freeze, who keeps me motivated.

March
*LA Marathon (4:42:22) Overall 6435/21504, Division 339/935, Gender 4632/12385. Blistering sun & heat made my 20th Marathon a grueling challenge, but ultimately rewarding experience. Especially with sideline support from my longtime LA pal, Gena.

April
*Run for the Parks 4 miler (35:01) Overall 2234/5542, Gender 1577/2824, Age 106/216. One of my favorite annual events and a sure sign of Spring, even in chilly temps (37 deg). A treat to run with my new pal, Shana. http://twitpic.com/e0gywc

May
*UAE Healthy Kidney 10k (56:09) Overall 3755/7975, Gender 2598/4111, Age 162/294. Humid but fun run around Central Park inspired by some real life heroes who also participated. http://twitpic.com/e3gcie - http://twitpic.com/e3pvfl

June
A gig at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival provided me some Australian runs to remember along the Torrens River and through the Sydney Botanical Gardens. A movie junket in San Francisco afforded me the chance to escape for some beautiful miles along the Bay.

*Celebrate Israel Run 4 miler (34:46) Overall 2166/5530, Gender 1580/2815, Age 120/227.

July
Hong Kong. 100 Degrees. Humid. Treadmill. 'Nuff Said!

October
*Grete's Great Gallop Half Marathon (2:08:22) Overall 3973/5970, Gender 2348/3023, Age 177/248. The first chill of Autumn (46 degrees) as the leaves are on the cusp of changing color help make this the first, fun Fall race.

November
I didn't run any races, but NYC Marathon fever is impossible to escape and it was great to cheer on friends who were participating, like Joel...Amy...Josh & my good mate Kurt Fearnley who won the Wheelchair Division for an unprecedented FIFTH time! It is always an annual treat to spend time with him in the week leading up to the race. http://instagram.com/p/u5vjWrifnh/

My coach, Chris, and I also had a memorable Central Park RunningTour: http://beyonddefeat.com/central-park-history-running-tour-with-nelson-aspen/

December
Some great recreational runs while in Sydney...including a memorable jaunt across the scenic Harbour Bridge. The US Launch of my book was held at my favorite NYC running store, Jack Rabbit Sports, and so many of my running friends and supporters showed up, it was a very memorable night. Running brings people together...even non runners! http://instagram.com/p/wJg44zifpb/?modal=true

*Ted Corbitt 15km. (1:28:55) Overall 2692/4468, Gender 1621/2169, Age 123/179. One of my favorite runs of the year but a delayed Start in the freezing temps, a gusty wind and an unexpected two minute wait for the port-potty at Mile 3 compromised my results. But the Fun Factor was high!
