NELSON'S RUNNING

RUNNING REPORT - 2013

baltimore harborThis was another year filled with magical running moments for me, but most personally satisfying was rebounding from last year's injury to return to the distance running I love so much. In fact, 2013 not only brought me back to a Marathon...it set a new Personal Best for my overall annual tally: A Mileage Milestone! 1323.6 miles!

With all those footfalls, I experienced only minor discomfort and soreness. I found that my knees really do seem to benefit from glucosamine and fish oil supplements...and thanks to implementing the use of a "toe separator" and toe/glove socks, nothing has impaired me.

Not only have my Media outlets helped me share running adventures with friends and supporters around the world, but Twitter has been an invaluable tool in helping me network with others in the global running community. That's how I ended up meeting a Running Coach, Scott...who worked with me for several months to keep me strong and happy...most importantly, injury free and motivated.

2013 was also the year I turned 50! A new Age Division to conquer and, as evidenced by Age Grading data, proof that we recreational athletes can certainly keep improving as we get older. It was a year of training runs in gorgeous Riverside Park...and races in equally beautiful Central Park!

January
*Joe Kleinerman 10k Classic (56:27) AG time, 49:46. Overall 1700/3144, Age 151/213, Gender 1173/1719. Chilly and hilly! Temperature was right at the Freezing Mark!

April
*Scotland Run 10k (53:53) AG time, 47:31. Overall 3301/7838, Age 225/393, Gender 2415/4077. 35 degrees. This is my favorite annual fun run...and I not only did the "Braveheart" face paint...It was my first time running in a kilt! Liberating, for sure!

*Run for the Parks 4 miler (32:50) AG time, 28:57. Overall 1998/6218, Age 169/358, Gender 1501/3122. Still chilly at 37 degrees. The New York Road Runners designated this event as a "Run for Boston" to benefit victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings.

*Richard Family Fund. Organized by my friend, Sports Medicine expert Jordan Metzl, this short, solemn run around Central Park's lower loop was a fundraiser for the family of Boston's Martin Richard, the boy who was killed in the Marathon Bombings when he came to cheer on his mom who was running. Alongside my friends JoDell, Diane, the Doughman family and Amy, it was a wonderful way to show solidarity with others in the tight knit runner's world.

September
*Autism Speaks 4 miler (33:42) AG time, 29:29 (another PR!). Overall 1984/5100, Age 80/158, Gender 1358/2345. Mild 59 degrees. The first time the number "50" appeared on my racing bib. That was a moment I won't soon forget-- (at least until I'm 60).

*Hamptons Marathon (4:27:55). Overall 210/336, Age 5/10, Gender 127/183. Indian Summer in the Hamptons. My 19th Marathon and the full story here: http://nelsonaspen.com/blog/2013/10/02/marathon-19/

October
*Poland Spring Marathon KickOff, 5 Miler (45:12), AG Time 39:32. Overall 2619/5421, Age 108/197, Gender 1638/2487. A chilly trot through Central Park enjoying the Fall Foliage!

November
*Join the Voices 5 Miler (44:00), AG Time 38:29 (A Personal Best!). Overall 1701/4448, Age 60/115, Gender 1130/1982. A sad irony that only two hours before the race start, I received word that my friend Heidi Peters lost her battle with cancer, so this charity race to raise funds and awareness to fight Brain Cancer, was especially meaningful. Added inspiration came from the race leader, Iram Leon, who is living with the disease and ran with his daughter.

December
*Ted Corbitt 15km (1:28:03), AG Time 1:17:28. Overall 2546/4278, Age 107/153, Gender 1581/2142. The last race of the year was my first one in a snowstorm! Lots of layers kept me warm and I trotted along comfortably, avoiding slippery surfaces by keeping a steady pace.
